Lucas is sick now
Logan was sick early last week. Now a week later, Lucas has a fever and a strange sounding cough. The pediatrician said he thought it might be a sinus infection but who knows. When the kids are sick it affects my plans. I had an allergy testing appointment planned for Tuesday and a play date for a few of Logan's classmates on Wednesday and had to cancel them. Lucas has been napping the last few days which means he must be sick. He almost never naps, although he spends quiet time in his crib.
I have figured out that if I really want him to nap I can rock him and he will fall asleep. Logan was never able to fall asleep by being rocked but Lucas seems to really enjoy it. I know I should not start something when he is almost two but I also really enjoy the quiet, snuggle, alone time that Lucas and I share when I am rocking him.

13 pages of homework!
I picked Logan up from phonics class on Monday and the teacher told me he did great. He got another new book to read. After I got home there was a stapled packet of worksheet as well as his book in his folder. He has never had homework in this class yet at all. I asked him about it since his teacher did not mention the worksheets. He said he has to finish the work and bring it back to phonics class to get a prize in the treasure chest. Well, we have been spending hours working on this homework. It is not easy stuff. It is lots of tracing, writing, matching, cutting, pasting, coloring mostly about the letters q,p,b,d,u,n,m,w. I guess those are the lower case letters that kids have the most trouble with because they look like opposites of each other. I have not been told or noticed that Logan had any trouble differentiating those letters so maybe it was work that the whole class was given.
I am a little ticked off that they gave it to him on a Monday and he feels like we have to have it finished for Wednesday so he can get his prize. Seriously....13 pages of homework for a 3 year old to finish in less than 2 days!

Job search on hold, upcoming surgery
I am so tired of my own health drama so I know anyone that reads this blog is tired of hearing about it as well. I have not applied to any places to work yet. I want to get my health in order first.
I was sick with some kind or virus over the weekend or maybe it was a drug reaction. I have also had a mild headache and numbness in my hands for almost two weeks. I had a cervical vertebrae x-ray and blood work drawn which I have not found out the results yet. I have gotten the ball rolling for my upcoming exploratory laparoscopic surgery. I have had this mystery right sided pain for almost a year and a half. My doctors feel like I have been very patient and compliant. We have exhausted all of my non-surgical options leaving me no choice. I will be speaking with a general surgeon on Monday to see what he thinks. I will most likely have my appendix removed at minimum and they will search around for scar tissue, adhesions, endometriosis and growths. I have to get my health in order so I can enjoy more of my kid's childhood. I hope and pray that the two doctors doing this upcoming surgery find something that they can fix and I can go on with my life. I will know more after my appointment on Monday but I think the surgery will be 3-4 weeks away.
E went with me to my appointment this week. It was the first appointment since I was pregnant with Lucas that he has gone to. At one point he stood up and started pacing, then excused himself out of the room. He looked very pale and the doctor was worried about him. I thought he was going to pass out but he came back with a glass of water and some color had returned to his face. I don't really get it...he can deliver our baby and clean up the mess afterwards but almost passes out talking about surgery!

Logan is funny
The other day we had a young friend over who was playing with Logan. I was having such a hard time understanding what this child was saying and I understand "toddler talk". The friend was telling a long detailed story and Logan and I were trying to really listen and understand what they were trying to tell us. Logan looked so serious and had all of his attention on this other child. He was trying so hard to understand this long, drawn out story. He turned to me and very seriously said...
"Mommy..... I think he speaks Spanish? Does he?"
I said, "No, honey but that is the cutest thing I have heard you say all day."

Sickness in the household
The boys have been super lucky this year with sicknesses. They have gotten lots of colds and runny noses but nothing that needed a doctor's attention. With our recent trips to the gym, now we have a sick child. We put the kids to bed at 6:30 again since they did not take a nap and Logan coughed every few seconds for the first two hours. The coughing woke him up around 12:30 and I went up to give him some medicine and a drink. He was very warm and a temp of 101.6. Logan is still coughing but not feverish anymore. I worked around the house cleaning for a play date at our house that was supposed to be today. It seems like Murphy's law is in effect. This is at least the second time I have had to cancel a play date due to sickness in our household.
After being in the house with the kids plus a few extra, I really wanted to get out of the house this afternoon. We ran some errands and also went to our local Chick-fil-a since they were giving away free 8 piece chicken nuggets. Logan eats then wants to play. I think, "sure, get some energy out. You haven't had a fever since the middle of the night." After we get home, Logan started running a fever again around 7 pm. Now, I am one of those moms who takes their sick kids out to infect everyone else....great! Sorry to everyone that I knew and didn't know at Chick-fil-a. I really hope your child doesn't get sick!

Preschool next year
At Logan's preschool you get to register early if you are a current student with your first and second choice. I chose M/W/F mornings as first choice (no stay and play) and then same days but afternoon preschool for our second choice. I heard of one person in Logan's whole class that got their first choice. Logan is going to be in the afternoon preschool which runs from 12-2:40. Some of next year I will also enroll him in their phonics class from 3-4. I was a little disappointed when I found out but am trying to look at the positives. I won't have to rush around in the mornings to get out of the door by 8:10. I don't have to pack a lunch anymore. I could take the kids whenever I wanted in the morning to the gym and Logan can stay after preschool to go to phonics class without another trip over there. We will be able to do morning play dates. The disadvantage could be having to feed the kids such an early lunch at 11am on those days. Logan probably won't be napping next year and if he is then he can rest after he gets home.
Recent things about Logan
Logan is doing great in phonics class. It is fun to see his teacher so "blown away" (her words) by his abilities. She tells me things like "Today we finished all of his word lists and he has moved onto books" ....well, yes, I told them he has been reading for a while now. Logan's newest thing he seems to enjoy is math. He loves for me to make up addition problems and he can write the answers. Just easy stuff for now like 2 +3 and 0+5 but he really enjoys it. I bought several more math workbooks because he really enjoys it and I like playing teacher.
Logan also really loves his Leapster2 he got for Christmas. He got five different games and my favorite one is Pet Pals. He will play it for hours if I let him. Logan has earned 604 hearts already. It says it is for pre K-1st grade. It is great because it gives them letters to draw to practice. The game really makes learning fun by making your puppy catch a frisbee at the right answer for a math problem or taking the puppy for a walk to find certain words the game calls out. He washes the puppy by following the directions in the right order and feeds the puppy. It really is cute and I highly recommend this game if you have a leapster.
