Eye doctor appointment

Logan did so great at the eye doctor. He was a star patient and followed all of the directions. He was talkative and personable and never acted scared. Both the doctor and opthamologist had lots of compliments for him as well as having to answer many questions from Logan. Logan is definitely near sighted (which means he can't see things very well far away). Apparently almost all children are the opposite, far sighted, until age 6 until their eyes average out. Logan is already near sighted and the doctor said his eyesight will continue to get worse and worse as he ages. He has 20/50 vision in one eye and 20/60 vision in the other eye with astigmatism. The doctor wrote a prescription for glasses. He said there is a level of decreased vision where he said he would really recommend that Logan gets glasses and said he is not there yet. I guess his mind set is that he would be wearing glasses or contacts for the rest of his life and there is no reason to start now. The doctor said it was a family decision and if we wanted to get him glasses we could or we could wait until next year to see what kind of trend his vision is going to be.

I find this very confusing. The doctor said he has decreased vision and obviously cannot see normally but doesn't recommend glasses. Logan knows he cannot see things as well as I can. He is frustrated that he has to get up close to see something. So my question is... if he was an adult, would he be told that he needed glasses to drive or function in daily life? Of course I did not think of this question until after we left the appointment.

So, for now I think we are going to wait until next June and if his vision is the same or worse we will get him glasses that he will wear for school.

Poor eyesight and other news

As the date approaches for our pediatric opthamologist appointment I am growing more and more certain my poor child hasn't been able to see his whole life. I am 95% certain that he needs glasses. We were sitting on the couch this evening. He has been able to tell time for a while now and I asked him what the numbers say on the clock on our DVR. I could read them just fine and he said "Mommy, I can't see them. I have to get closer to see the numbers. Can you get me some glasses so I could be able to see the numbers?" My heart just broke and I felt so bad for my poor child who hasn't been able to see things from far away. He had to get right up on the numbers to be able to tell me what they were. I said "Oh, honey. We will get you some cool glasses and you will be able to see really great." I think he is actually excited about going to the eye doctor tomorrow because he desperately wants to be able to see like every one else. E is all torn up about Logan possibly needing glasses. He knows what it was like to have glasses as a child and he is really upset that Logan might have to wear them. I will update soon when we find out the verdict.

In other exciting news, Lucas has been doing so great with the potty. I can't say he is potty trained yet but he is going to the potty out in public, at the house 3-7 times a day and pooping in the potty too. This is over a year earlier than Logan. I am so encouraged and thrilled by his progress. The key to our success has been keeping the potty in the kitchen, giving treats to both boys every time Lucas makes it to the potty (it makes Logan really excited for Lucas and he praises him and helps him when he is included in the treats) and dum dum lollipops. I tried the M&Ms but it did not motivate Lucas like the dum dums do. I use lots of positive reinforcement, make a big deal out of each success and make Lucas take responsibility of his accidents (ie. he has to try to wipe up his own pee pee and take his wet underwear to the laundry basket himself) My plan for now is to do underwear or naked at the house, pull ups out of the house and diapers for bed and nap time. I don't want to go back to full time diapers. We are now committed to it!

Logan's self portrait

Logan has never been to much into arts and crafts. Lately when we go to the gym he sits at a table with other children and draws pictures. He carefully folds them up and puts them into his pocket and surprises us with them when we pick him up. I love this picture. He uses a different color for each section of his body and in case we did not know it was himself he wrote his name on the top.

Another year older, another year wiser

At least that is how the saying goes. I might be wiser but I think every year that goes by that I stay home with my kids, I loose more brain cells.

I had such a great day today. It was much, much better than Mother's day. I woke up early as usual but enjoyed an hour walk by myself to start the day. E worked from home and surprised me with the cutest card from the kids. It was a scrap book card and had pictures and sayings from the kids. "Mom, you're awesome because....you always..help us to get things or you make....chicken and she is pretty" I over heard them doing some kind of project last night so I knew something was coming. Then E gave me the Wii fit to go with our new Wii and a fun snow skiing game. It is so fun!

I took the kids to the pool and we had a great time. Logan is trying to do freestyle and it is the cutest thing. He really enjoyed it when I got my goggles on and we spent lots of time underwater looking and waving at each other. We ran to Chick fil a for lunch then naps. E told me we were going shopping at 4 and then we were going to out to eat at 6 pm. I was surprised by several great friends and kids at the child friendly restaurant. I had a great time with everyone and the kids really seemed to enjoy themselves. They ordered me a delicious piece of chocolate cake and finished up the night watching my favorite show of all time, So you think you can dance. What a great day!

Enjoying the summer

We have been really enjoying all of the fun summer activities to be had in our area. This year is so much easier with the kids than it was last year. Last year at this time I was still nursing, trying to keep both kids from drowning, or burning to a crisp in the Texas sun.

This year is so much more enjoyable. I feel like I can take the boys anywhere by myself. Both kids love the gym and with my renewed energy we have been going there frequently. Logan has been a little behind with the water confidence but just a few days ago started holding his breath and going underwater for diving rings with his new cool goggles. We have been to a few birthday parties, trips to the arboretum, museums, and our friend's neighborhood beach pool. Everyday there are so many fun things to do and I finally don't feel overwhelmed to take my kids out to them. The really nice thing is they are totally fine if they don't get a nap. It is so nice to go and do whatever we want without worrying about someone falling asleep in the car. Swim lessons start on Monday and will keep us busy for a month. I need to work on potty training with Lucas and then we will really be doing great!
